About

Servais Services specialises in packing and shipping of sensitive freight, principally artwork and antiques.  Situated in the heart of Cape Town, we have been in business since 1947.

Company History

Following his demobilisation after World War II, Mr Norman Servais (Snr) returned to South Africa in 1947 to join his family who had already moved there from England.  Although he had worked closely with his father, Fernand Servais, at their British engineering business, Servais Silencers, before the war, Norman was keen to branch out on his own, and set about establishing a company which could assist people with the transport and removal of their personal effects.  He decided to call it Servais Services, in honour of the company his father had founded in England.  His first warehouse was in Woodstock, Cape Town, in a building which has now undergone a transformation into fashionable apartments.

His enterprise gradually expanded, and Norman discovered that he had a special talent in the area of caring for those items for which his customers required sensitive packing and transport – art, antiques, collectables.  With a friendly, engaging personality and continually reliable service, Norman rapidly developed good business relationships with local antique dealers and galleries and expanded his customer base.  Over time, he was commissioned to pack several unusual items: human archaeological exhibits from the East African Rift Valley – and even a collection of rock from the Apollo 11 Moon Landing!

His eldest son, Dair Servais, entered the business following the completion of his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at UCT, and brought to the company his wider understanding of the art world.  When Norman retired from active control over the company, Dair continued to run Servais Services for some years, as well as spending some time gaining experience with other shipping agencies.   Dair continues to offer the same reliable service and guaranteed attention to detail that customers require for the packing of their sensitive freight, art and collectibles.  Contact Dair now with your enquiry.
